The Place Nobody From Out of Town Finds on Their Own

Heckscher Drive runs along the north bank of the St. Johns River from Jacksonville proper out toward Mayport and the Atlantic — a stretch of Florida coastline that most visitors never see because it doesn't appear on the obvious tourist maps. Locals know it as the road to the ferry, to the shrimp boats, to the kind of waterfront that hasn't been developed into condos yet. About midway out, sitting on the river with a deck that hangs over the water, is the Sandollar.

It has been there since 1954. Originally a small operation built to serve the Mayport shrimp fleet across the river — back when the bridges on Heckscher Drive were made of wood and moved with the tide — the Sandollar grew with the appetite of the neighborhood. The current building went up in 1988, bigger and better positioned on the water. The original philosophy stayed: fresh seafood, fair prices, and a view that earns the drive.

"The deck sits at the water's edge. Cargo ships pass so close you can read the names painted on their hulls. The Grimaldi Lines container ship came through at sunset. Nobody at the table stopped talking about it for ten minutes."

The location is the first thing visitors notice and the last thing they forget. The St. Johns River at this point is wide, active, and entirely commercial — this is a working river, and the Sandollar sits right on it. Freighters, container ships, Coast Guard vessels, shrimp boats, and recreational traffic all move through the channel in front of the deck. Watching a full-size cargo ship pass at eye level while eating grilled salmon is an experience that no restaurant in Jacksonville Beach or St. Augustine can offer.

The Food

The Sandollar is a seafood restaurant that has been serving the same community for seven decades. That longevity is not accidental. The kitchen knows what it does well and it does it consistently — fresh catch, simply prepared, with the kind of hush puppies that generate genuine loyalty.

What to Order

The hush puppies are famous and the fame is earned — light, not greasy, with a slightly sweet interior that pairs perfectly with whatever comes after. Start there and do not skip them. The blackened preparations are the kitchen's signature move: blackened redfish and blackened mahi are what regulars come back for. The salmon — grilled, not fried — is excellent. Fresh, properly cooked, and priced fairly for what it is. Gator tail appears on the menu and is worth ordering for the novelty if nothing else, though the fish is the real reason to make the drive.

The full bar does the job. The menu covers steaks, pasta, and salads for anyone at the table who doesn't want seafood, but the kitchen is oriented toward the river and what comes out of it. Order accordingly.

The Staff

The staff at the Sandollar is one of the consistent bright spots across years of reviews. This is a neighborhood restaurant with neighborhood people running it — the kind of place where the servers know the regulars by name and treat first-timers like they might become regulars. The energy is casual and genuine, not performative. When something goes wrong — and in a busy waterfront kitchen something occasionally will — it gets handled without drama.

The Deck, the River, and What You'll See

The deck is the reason to come and the reason to come back. It runs along the full waterfront face of the restaurant, tables right at the rail with the St. Johns River three feet below. On a clear evening — and there are many of them on this stretch of the coast — the western sky turns colors that make the food taste better.

The river traffic is the unexpected entertainment. Commercial shipping to the Port of Jacksonville runs directly in front of the Sandollar. Container ships, vehicle carriers, tankers, and bulk carriers pass close enough to feel the wake. The Mayport Ferry runs nearby. Shrimp boats work the channel. Dolphins follow the wakes. In the warmer months, manatees appear regularly — especially around sunset when they surface near the dock.

Live music runs on the deck on weekends. The schedule varies — check the Sandollar's Facebook page before you go to see what's on. When the music is right and the river is busy and the sun is going down behind you, the Sandollar earns every minute of the drive to get there.

What the Regulars Order

Hush puppies — award-winning, not optional. Order them first.

Blackened redfish — the kitchen's signature. Properly done.

Blackened mahi — same technique, slightly lighter. Both worth it.

Grilled salmon — fresh, simply prepared, fairly priced.

Fish tacos — blackened mahi version is the pick.

Gator tail — a Florida classic. Worth trying once.

Deck table, right rail — ask specifically. The view from the rail is why you came.
